The Virtual Institute of Statistical Genetics resulted from a successful grant proposal put together by the 2007 MapNET steering committee. Founded in 2005, MapNet is a collective of New Zealand-based researchers from organisations involved in gene mapping.
Other activities by MapNet include holding annual molecular mapping workshops, encouraging informal collaborations and interacting with CRI and University managers.
MapNet encourages pre-commercial, cross-sector, gene mapping R&D in a range of organisms valuable to New Zealand's economy, ecology and culture.
Organisations represented in MapNET include: University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, The University of Auckland, AgResearch, Scion, Plant and Food Research, ViaLactia Biosciences, Livestock Improvement Corporation, ESR and NIWA. Other New Zealand-based organisations are welcome to join.
